Wildwood Gives Back
May, 2007
Wildwood Christian Academy is a small school with a
big heart. Participation in community activities is part
of what makes the students of Wildwood unique. “We are
involved in numerous service projects throughout the
year,” states Nancy Hammer, Headmaster. “Learning to
give back to those around us is a tremendous lesson to
teach our students. It’s a lesson they can use for the
rest of their lives.”
There are Wildwood students and teachers giving of
their time everywhere you look in the community. Not
long ago, Wildwood held a “Day of Service” on a
Saturday. On this day students and teachers from
Wildwood volunteered their time to better the world
around them. For example, the Kindergarten and 1st Grade
classes wrote cards and drew pictures for service men
and women in the VA Hospital in Atlanta. The 2nd Grade
wrote letters and made artwork for local soldiers
stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan. The 3rd Grade
presented musical entertainment and spent their time
with residents at Grandview Health Care in Jasper and
Wildwood Health Care in Talking Rock. The 4th and 5th
Grades helped at Art and Antiques in the Garden (a
Master Gardener project) at Tate Gymnasium. The 6th and
7th Grades helped at the Plant Sale at Big Canoe and the
8th Grade students worked at the Thrift Store in Jasper.
Service projects such as these present the students with
opportunities to learn the value of giving their time
and talents back to their community.
During the month of February, the Wildwood Student
Council led the school in a food drive. “Love All You
Can” was the slogan inspiring the student body to donate
canned goods for C.A.R.E.S. Ministries. The students
collected a pick-up truck load of non-perishable food
items that will be distributed throughout the community.
Lastly, this year the students raised money for
Wildwood’s scholarships fund with the “Count Your
Blessings Fund’ program. Students raised money by
selling baked goods, hosting car washes, completing yard
work, babysitting, cutting grass, pulling weeks, etc.
The “Count Your Blessings Fund was created by the
Wildwood students to benefit other students accepted to
Wildwood but without financial assistance would not
otherwise be able to afford tuition and therefore would
not be able to attend Wildwood. Once the students raise
as much money as they can, friends, family and guests
attending Wildwood’s annual auction and gala match the
“Count Your Blessings Fund” total or bid an amount that
is also contributed to the Fund. This year the Fund
through the students’ efforts and bidders at the auction
raised an incredible $4,662.00 to benefit children that
Wildwood students don’t even know.
Wildwood Christian Academy is located in beautiful
Marble Hill, Georgia just minutes from Big Canoe.
